The Hitopadesha is a composition of stories from India written in Sanskrit by Narayan Pandit. These stories were written before more than a thousand years BC.
The word Hitopadesha comprises of two words – “Hita” and “Upadesha”. Translated it would mean Counsel (Upadesha) for the Benefit (Hita). Hence Hitopadesha is a collection of tales for counsel and advice for the welfare and benefit of everyone. Because it is written in such a manner such that even children can understand the implicit moral of the story, the stories have become very popular in India throughout the ages.
